The island of Ortigia
Cradle of civilization
This island is 2750 years old. It has been a cradle of many civilizations, including Greek, Arab, Byzantine and many more . Wandering through the characteristic streets one can see remnants of Greek monuments, medieval architecture, baroque facades, and other historical sites. There is even a castle! Walking around this historic center is a must. Luckily, we have apartments that are mere steps away from it all.
The Archeological Park
from the Greek theater to the Roman amphitheater
Siracusa has one of the best preserved archeological sites of the ancient world. The Greek theater is still operational! At its peak, it could sit up to 15,000 and is the birthplace of many famous Greek plays. The adjacent Roman amphitheater hosted fights between Christians and lions, and gladiator fights. Nearby, you can explore some of the early catacombs that were used by the early Christians for burial. They also used these catacombs for religious meetings and hiding spots.
